# Engineering Award Recognizes EiE Has the Power to Inspire

On Nov. 20, 2016, she accepted the [Pre-University Educator Award](http://www.eie.org/news/eie-director-receives-ieee-award-engineering-education) from the Educational Activities Board of [IEEE](https://www.ieee.org/index.html), a professional organization for engineers and scientists and the world’s largest professional association working to advance technology for the benefit of humanity.

#### Promoting Student Interest in STEM Careers

IEEE specifies that the award is given for work that inspires PreK-12 students to appreciate and understand mathematics, science, technology, and the engineering design process and encourages them to pursue technical careers. That charge is a perfect match for the [mission of the Engineering is Elementary (EiE) project](http://www.eie.org/about-engineering-is-elementary-EiE): Christine launched the curriculum development process in 2003 with the express goal of increasing student understa![2015.12.01_IEEE_logo_and_tagline.jpg](https://yesblog.mos.org/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog_Images/2015.12.01_IEEE_logo_and_tagline.jpg?width=300&name=2015.12.01_IEEE_logo_and_tagline.jpg "2015.12.01_IEEE_logo_and_tagline.jpg")nding of science and engineering, and promoting all students' interest in engineering careers.

“I’m honored to accept this award on behalf of the whole EiE team,” says Cunningham. “The working professional engineers and scientists who make up IEEE’s membership recognize that early exposure to engineering has a significant positive impact on kids’ career choices down the road, and that we can—and must—start cultivating the next generation of global innovators [at a very early age](http://www.eie.org/sites/default/files/eie_narrative_v3.pdf) . . . long before they take their first college-level engineering class.”

“Christine is a pioneer and visionary in introducing young children to engineering concepts and practices,” says [Dr. Teri Reed](http://sefi2015.sciencesconf.org/resource/page/id/30), Assistant Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs for Engineering at Texas A&M University. “In particular, she is deeply committed getting underserved and underrepresented children engaged and interested in engineering and science. EiE materials were developed with this commitment in mind.”

#### Innovative STEM Education in DC

Ford is a [longtime friend of EiE](http://maurythinktank.blogspot.com/2014/04/3rd-grade-environmental-engineers.html), a [Raytheon-EiE scholarship recipient](http://www.eie.org/sites/default/files/july_2014.pdf) and a dynamic innovator who launched the school’s “Think Tank,” a hands-on STEM lab where she teaches EiE (along with other science and engineering curricula).

#### A Pioneer in Engineering Education

When the EiE project launched more than a decade ago, no one was rushing to proclaim the importance of early engineering education; in fact, many educators were quite skeptical that engineering had a place in the elementary classroom. But today elementary engineering is mainstream, thanks in part to the release of the [Next Generation Science Standards](http://www.nextgenscience.org/next-generation-science-standards) and (in many cases) newly modified [state science standards](http://www.eie.org/eie-curriculum/eie-connects-state-science-standards)that incorporate engineering. 

“Christine’s leadership in developing and implementing the Engineering is Elementary program has been completely transformative,” says [Dr. Laura Bottomley](http://www.engr.ncsu.edu/theengineeringplace/about/bio-bottomley.php), director of The Engineering Place at North Carolina State University. “She defied the stereotype that engineering is too complex for elementary students and teachers by providing solid and ongoing support for professional development for teachers and high-quality materials for classroom use.”

Awards recognizing that our work has made an impact are deeply gratifying. And now that elementary engineering education is a mainstream idea, you might think our work is done. But that's not the case. We're taking a moment to celebrate, and then it's full steam ahead (or is that full STEM ahead?) on a host of new engineering education projects—creating resources for preschool students and afterschool programs, and digital learning opportunities for educators—with our eyes on the goal of seeing all students fired up about STEM.
