# How Computer Science Learning Today Prepares Students for the 21st Century

Learners who are ready to make advancements that will shape the rest of the century and beyond tend to be excited by flexible, open-ended, project-based, real-world learning situations. These types of problem-solving opportunities not only teach content skills, but [instill curiosity](https://www.scilearn.com/blog/interest-drive-road-to-academic-success.php), which is fundamental to lifelong learning, and help to develop communication and teamwork skills — as well as the freedom and responsibility that comes from taking charge of their own learning.

Introducing [computer science and engineering concepts](https://www.eie.org/stem-curricula/computer-science) to children early helps them develop a foundational understanding of the world around them and explore how to improve it. Exposure to both subjects in elementary grades ensures more equity in learning as children start to gain awareness and interest in STEM. 

Computer Science learning in particular is a skill of ever-increasing importance in today’s academic and research worlds — as well as in business and beyond.
